Enhance the performance of micro switch to increase competitiveness

- Aug 29, 2018-

Chinese suppliers have increased the performance of micro switch  to increase their competitiveness. Demand from traditional and emerging markets is on the rise and is expected to stimulate the development of such products in the coming months. Although China's micro-switch products are still dominated by entry-level and mid-range products, some companies are launching more models with higher electrical and mechanical performance and added value to move toward the high-end market.

Current research and development efforts focus on improving product durability, increasing current rating and voltage, reducing maneuverability and extending product life. In terms of product opening and closing life, it is generally higher than 1 million times. The goal of these companies is to increase to 2 to 3 million times. At the same time, these manufacturers are also improving the waterproof, explosion-proof, dust-proof and high-temperature resistance of the products, and using metal seals.

In addition, Chinese suppliers are also increasing the production of surface mount (SMD) products, which are suitable for compact designs and are increasingly being used in microelectronics and portable products. At present, such switches account for 10-20% of the output of most manufacturers. Providing competitive prices is another strategy for local companies to counter foreign manufacturers. For example, for products of the same structure and specifications,

The microswitch industry is highly competitive, with overseas manufacturers such as Honeywell, Omron, Alps and Burgess taking advantage in the high-end market. Despite this, local companies are confident that they will achieve higher sales in the coming months. Its export revenue and shipments will exceed last year's level. In order to cope with the growth of orders, manufacturers have purchased new automatic equipment and increased foreign trade personnel.

China micro switch popular

The wide range of products makes the micro-switch industry in China maintain a strong vitality. Although the growing popularity of touch panels is eroding the demand in the computer field, other areas continue to bring orders to the micro switch industry. This product is most commonly used in household and commercial appliances such as ovens, washing machines and vending machines, water heaters, game controllers and shredders.

In addition, micro switch  are integrated into sprinklers, plumbing systems, industrial equipment, and some PCs and peripherals. The aerospace and automotive industries are also very interested in this product. Aircraft, spacecraft, tanks, turnstiles and electronic parking brake actuators are their main applications.

There are about 100 micro switch suppliers in mainland China. The Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta are important production bases, most of which are located in Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces. In terms of production capacity, Wenzhou is the largest micro-switch production base in mainland China, followed by Dongguan and Shenzhen. In terms of the number of enterprises, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province has concentrated more than half of the nation's micro-switch manufacturers. From the perspective of the nature of the enterprise, most of the manufacturers are local enterprises, and others are Taiwan-funded or Hong Kong-funded enterprises. From the production experience, most companies have more than 10 years of manufacturing experience, and produce other types of switches, including touch switches, push button switches, slide switches, boat switches, toggle switches, rocker switches and vane switches. They provide related devices, connectors, and sockets. Its production complies with ISO 9001 and 14000 standards.

Type and specification

The micro switch device is mainly different in structure. According to the size, it is divided into basic type, miniature and ultra-miniature. According to the rated current, it is divided into normal type, DC, small current or large current type. The common type accounts for the majority in production because of its wide application. According to the number of poles and the closed position, it can be divided into SPST, SPDT, SPCO/SPTT, DPST, DPDT and DPCO.

Many models of micro-switches are equipped with stainless steel auxiliary press components for a variety of enhanced applications. At present, the most popular on the market is the toggle switch. According to the different requirements of different applications, it can be further divided into curved micro switch, roller micro switch, short boom micro switch, standard arm micro Dynamic switch and long boom type micro switch.

In addition, there are hinge lever type, button type and panel mounted micro switches. The hinge rod type micro switch also includes a short hinge rod type and a roller type hinge rod type, and the button type micro switch includes a short button type and a spring thin button type. The panel-mounted switch can be added with a normal or cross-wheel to slightly change the shape and function of the switch. These products use screws or soldered terminals. Manufacturers also offer models with custom lugs and models that are combined with other structures such as moving rods or bulkheads.

The micro switch has a mechanical life of 30,000 to 10 million times. Typical lifespans are 100,000, 200,000, 500,000, 1 million, 3 million, 5 million, and 8 million. The current rated current of mainstream products is 3-10A and the voltage is 30-200V. Products manufactured by Chinese manufacturers are RoHS compliant, and some products are also compliant with ENEC, UL, CQC and CUL standards.

Material and switch price

micro switch are basically made of plastic and metal. Metal acts as a switch contact that determines switch life and spirituality. Low-impedance materials such as brass, copper, silver and alloys and gold are commonly used. The contacts may include a universal type, a split type, a holding gap, and an adjustable gap type.

As for the switch housing, most manufacturers prefer PBT because of its good fire resistance and crystallization rate. For cost reasons, some manufacturers use phenolic plastics, PVC or PA46/66. Although these materials can be sourced locally, many manufacturers still choose to source from Japan and the United States for product quality.

The rise in raw material prices last year prompted some component manufacturers to adjust product prices. However, some vendors still keep prices unchanged to maintain sales and attract more buyers. Some manufacturers said that if raw material costs continue to rise, this year plans to adjust the sales price. Others say they are maintaining long-term relationships with material suppliers to ensure a stable supply of materials and favorable prices, thereby avoiding forced price increases.
